Hints for Farm & Home

Install a high tensile wire tightening spool on each clothesline. As the line stretches, simply re-tighten. This will keep up with the sagging and no clothes dragging on the ground. Wives are a lot happier for it! These spools can be found in your fencing section of farm supply stores.

Remove one section from a three-section round bale feeder to make a nice portable hay feeder for smaller calves.

Wisconsin A fire hose nozzle works very well to wash out a milking parlor or milkhouse after milking. We special-ordered ours from Do-it-Best.

To get rid of your twine as you use your bales: take both twines, stretch out. Fold in half. Make a loop at about one-fourth of distance from one end. Fold long end in half and push through eye of your loop. Pull tightly. You should have same size tail on both sides of knot. You now have a tight bundle of twine which you may drop as bedding. It will not tangle in your spreader beaters and will decompose in the fields. (Do not use plastic twine!) These little bundles also work well as kindling when starting a fire.

If you have a young child that is always cleaning out cupboard drawers, empty a bottom drawer and fill it with toys. It will entertain them for hours.

Dried leaves are one of autumn’s best gifts to your garden. It is important to shred leaves before mulching. An easy way to do it is go over the leaves with the catcher on your lawn mower. Mulch about 4 to 6 inches thick, watering it down to keep it in place.

M.L. – Illinois

A cordless drill works very well to roll up electric fence wire. I loosen the quarter-mile-long wire at the far end and then roll it up in a few minutes with the drill. I use aluminum wire.
