Hints for Farm & Home To keep flies out of the house or other buildings tape several pieces of Fly Revenge, 12 in. wide and 3 ft. long, out around the door frame where the flies sit. It is sticky on one side and comes in a roll and can be cut to desired size. J.B. – New York To control cucumber beetles: Mix together 1 Tbsp. ammonia, 1 tsp. Epsom salt, 1 Tbsp. salt petre, 1 tsp. soda, 1 gal. water. Pour around roots every two weeks. This is enough for six plants. E.M. – Ohio Turn your summer flies into meat by letting a dozen roosters roam the farm buildings and barnyard. No need to buy feed for them once they are 5-6 weeks old. Buy in early spring and butcher in fall. Chicks are cheap and you do not need to search for eggs. L.R. – Indiana An insulated electrical wire out of an old building makes a good underground electric fence wire for gates, etc. D.A.M. – Wisconsin If you’re using electric fencing and have a cow that slips through constantly, put a halter on her and fasten a bull chain to it. Helps a lot. S.L. – Wisconsin To wean calves that suck one another, take a 1½-inch length of 1½” or 2” Schedule 40 PVC pipe and cut one side of the circle with a hacksaw. Pull the circle open and insert into the offending calves’ nostrils. It really works well, even in older cattle. E.T.L. – Indiana For help in having wormless apples, make a hole in a jug in the side almost at the top and put equal parts sugar and vinegar in it, then hang them in your fruit trees. About five to ten jugs are enough, depending on the number of trees. Put them out before blooming when the buds are small. L.Z. – New York Save your eggshells when you are making noodles, and put them in the holes when transplanting your tomato plants. Helps control blight. L.E.Y. – Indiana For good, fresh-tasting goats’ milk, put a few ice cubes in the bottom of the pail when starting to milk. L.M. – Ohio Here’s a recipe for combating powdery mildew: 1 tsp. vinegar, 1 tsp. Listerine, 3-4 drops soap. Mix into a bottle filled with water. Spray affected areas. C.K. - Ohio Ethel Mulligan from Ohio has the winning Hint of the Season and will receive $50. Send your tips and hints to Hints for Farm and Home, PO Box 85, Mt. Hope, Ohio 44660. We will pay $10 for each hint published and $50 for the Hint of the Season. |
